The Penta Career Center, 9301 Buck Rd., Perrysburg, is hosting a Thanksgiving bake sale to benefit the Wood County Fraternal Order of Police #109 Lodge’s Cops and Kids program. Culinary arts and criminal justice students have created an online store for pre-ordering an assortment of delicious baked goods, which will be available for pickup from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 3:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Menu items include cheesecakes (pumpkin, apple cider, or New York-style; $12 to $15), pies (Dutch apple or pumpkin; $12), and the currently-closed student-run restaurant’s Culinary Connection house rolls ($5).
The Cops and Kids program serves to build relationships between area children and local law enforcement officers. One favorite activity involves having police officers go Christmas shopping with kids for needed clothes and wished-for toys, an event that is scheduled for December.
To place your order, go to pccmarket.org. You can also make an extra donation to the good cause in addition to shopping at the bake sale (or in case items have already sold out due to high demand).
■ Breakfast with Santa — On the Go!
Santa is coming to the Maumee Senior Center, 2430 S. Detroit Ave., Maumee, for a drive-through event on Dec. 5. There will be two sessions to choose from: 9 to 10 a.m. and 10 to 11 a.m. Breakfast with Santa — On the Go! is for children ages 12 and under.
“After 25 years of Breakfast with Santa, the Maumee Senior Center board of trustees and the staff didn’t want to disappoint the children in the community. For many families, coming to the Maumee Senior Center to visit Santa is an annual tradition,” said Malinda Ruble, executive director, in a statement. They’ve put a contemporary, coronavirus-accommodating spin on the 2020 edition by offering “a contactless, safe environment for children and their parents and grandparents to enjoy the holiday season.”
Rather than gathering inside, families will be able to drive down Candy Cane Lane and enjoy a breakfast snack, mail letters to the North Pole, collect holiday goodies, and wave to the jolly man in red himself who will be stationed at an antique fire engine.
There is no charge for this program. Participants are asked to donate non-perishable foods and financial contributions to the center, which has continued to provide meals to homebound seniors despite being closed to the public. So far, they’ve served more than 12,000 meals, which is twice the number provided in 2019.
The deadline to sign up is Friday. To print off a registration form, go to maumeeseniorcenter.com/News.html; you can mail it to the center at the above address or email it to maumeeseniorcenter@gmail.com. For more information, call 419-893-1994.
