Barbara Hendel: St. Jude Dream Home raises walls, more than $1.25 million

The coronavirus pandemic continues, but so do fund-raising efforts, thanks to generous community supporters.

THE St. Jude Dream Home is finished and will be open for tours in August, specifics yet to be determined because of coronavirus.

The home is in the Quarry Ridge subdivision at 8734 Howe Ln. in Sylvania Township. A virtual tour is also being planned.

More than $1,250,000 has been raised, according to Mike White, owner of Buckeye Real Estate Group, who built the home and donated time and materials. Also, ticket-holders’ tickets will be entered into the MARKET Dream Home Shopping Spree with prizes including a 2020 Honda Fit LX, courtesy of Jim White Honda.

The proceeds go to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, founded by Toledo-born and raised Danny Thomas, a comedian, singer, actor, producer, and philanthropist whose career spanned five decades. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, or food — so the family can focus on helping their child live.

The home giveaway to the lucky ticket-holder is Aug. 13. Tune in to WTOL/WUPW at 5 p.m.

The nearly $400,000-valued house has a nearly 2,800-square-foot floor plan created by Lori LaPoint at LaPoint Design which features four bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, a first floor laundry, a two-story great room and entry, a sun room, a spacious kitchen, wet bar, garage storage space, and more.

But there's more to seeing the house than just the free tour. There is an open house prize: A $10,000 furniture shopping spree at La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries. Register for free at the open house for a chance to win.

Among the sponsors are the Danberry Company, Directions Credit Union, Mossing Spas & More, Playground World, Midland Title, Durocher’s and others, plus national sponsors Brizo, Shaw Floors, and Trane and Bosch.

BYRNE Stapleton, CEO of the Stapleton Insurance Group and board member of Anne Grady Services for individuals with intellectual disabilities, donated arts, crafts, board and card games, and outdoor activities for the clients of Anne Grady and provided pastries to thank the faculty and staff members that work diligently during the coronavirus pandemic. Mr. Stapleton reflected that Anne Grady residents went weeks without seeing their families, and supplies used to entertain residents were depleted. Yet the staff made sure clients were well taken care of and activities continued.
