Olive’s on Main will host downtown Sylvania’s first poetry slam Friday as part of Red Bird Sylvania’s First Fridays.
Anyone can participate ... just bring three of your best poems as long as they are three minutes or less in length. Sign-up begins at 5:30 p.m. at the restaurant, located at 5627 Main St. The event starts at 6 p.m.
Volunteers from the audience will also be chosen to be judges for the competition.
● The USA Junior Curling Championships, which began Tuesday, will continue through Sunday at the Black Swamp Curling Center in Bowling Green. Come watch as the top curlers in the country who are under 21 compete for the right to represent the United States at the World Junior Curling Championships, to be held later this month in Italy.
Tickets are $10 for a day pass and $40 for an event pass. Children under 10 and Bowling Green Curling Club members are admitted free. The curling center is located at 19901 N. Dixie Hwy. in Bowling Green. For more information visit bgcurlingclub.com.
● Culture Clash Records will hold an album release concert for alternative rockers My Own Desert Island on Friday.
The locally bred group, who released Spinning Around the Sun, Though My Feet Still Touch the Ground in February will be featured on a quadruple bill with Hemmingway Lane, Headband Henny, and Brown Maple.
Doors will open for the concert at the downtown record store (912 Monroe St.) starting at 6 p.m. and music will start at 7 p.m. Cost of entry is $10 at the door.
● The Toledo Symphony will be playing a dual program including Mozart’s Fortieth Symphony and Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony on both Friday and Saturday. The Beethoven piece is known its distinctive Allegretto, which takes the place of a typically slower section, and the Mozart piece is known for its dark scurrying opening.
Performances, led by conductor Giordano Bellincampi will take place at the Valentine Theatre (410 Adams St.) on Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 8 p.m.
Bellincampi is the Music Director of the Auckland Philharmonia. Previously, he was the principal conductor of I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan.
