Sara Jobin, associate conductor of the Toledo Opera, has been named the resident conductor of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.
The announcement was made this week by Zak Vasar, new president and CEO of the orchestra, changing her official status from “interim” to “resident.”
Jobin will continue her role with the opera in addition to her added symphony responsibilities.
“It is a privilege to work with the Toledo Symphony, probably one of the best, and hardest working, regional orchestras in the country,” Jobin said. “And it is a joy to work with the opera, whose adventurousness is surpassed only by the high quality of its productions. I look forward to a season of bringing people together through the power of beautiful music.”
Last season in her interim capacity, Jobin conducted 34 Toledo Symphony concerts and two Toledo Opera productions. This season will feature performances of Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Handel’s Messiah, and Barber’s Vanessa. She also will conduct several holiday and Young People’s concerts and performances in The Andersons Family and KeyBank Pops series that the orchestra produces annually.
Jobin also serves as the chief conductor of the Center for Contemporary Opera in New York, a position she has held since 2011. This season she will conduct the world premiere of Jane Eyre by Louis Karchin.
She is involved in a project bringing the Bach Mass in B minor to venues across the world. She has been Grammy nominated, and has made recent history by breaking the gender wall on the podiums of both the San Francisco and Baltimore opera houses.
With Jobin’s resident appointment, the search for a new principal conductor for the Toledo Symphony to replace Stephan Sanderling will continue as scheduled. Last season, Sanderling announced that he would conclude his tenure with the Toledo Symphony as of June, 2017.
