Benatar, Giraldo join Toledo Symphony Orchestra

Unbridled rock energy comes to Toledo on Saturday at Stranahan Theater

Taking a step into retro music land, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra welcomes classic rocker Pat Benatar and her longtime artistic partner Neil Giraldo as the headliners on the KeyBank Pops Concert Series.

A four-time Grammy winner, Benatar began her career as a classically trained mezzo-soprano. In 1973, she quit her job as a bank teller to pursue a life of singing, starting as most young artists do, singing gigs with local bands in the Richmond, Va., area.

After a less-than-stellar start, she packed it in and moved to New York City where a chance performance at an open mic night at Catch a Falling Star Club sent the crowd reeling and launched her from unknown to toast of the town with almost overnight success, according to her website.

In 1979, her producer introduced her to the then up-and-coming guitarist Neil Giraldo. Together they recorded their landmark album In the Heat of the Night, which included their three best-known tunes “Heartbreaker,” “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” and the number that went platinum, “We Live For Love.”

They bring their lifetimes’ worth of music making and unbridled rock energy to Toledo at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Stranahan Theater, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. Tickets and more information are available at 419-246-8000 or toledosymphony.com.
