Wood County museum exhibit examines poor farms in Ohio

A local photographer and senior lecturer for Bowling Green State University’s Visual Communication Technology program will talk about his experiences photographing for an exhibit of Ohio’s poor farms.

Jeff Hall’s show is part of a larger exhibition, For Comfort and Convenience: Public Charity in Ohio by Way of the Poor Farm, that has been installed at the Wood County Historical Center and Museum, 13660 County Home Rd.

Hall has spent the past year and a half traveling the state and taking photos of the remains of Ohio’s poor farms. The project was supported through the Ohio Arts Council and the Ohio Humanities Council.

The exhibition was coordinated in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the historical center, which was a former poor farm and later known as the infirmary and the county home, according to an article by BGSU.

'Lillith,' a print by Lillian Horschke from Lakewood High School, is part of the 36th annual 9th Congressional District Invitational Art Exhibition.

■ The Dayton Art Institute will be the first museum to host the touring exhibition, For America: Paintings from the National Academy of Design, when it opens this weekend.

The show features 100 paintings that highlight the collection and artistic membership of the National Academy of Design — the organization that, along with the American Federation of Arts, organized the exhibition, which runs through June 2.

For America is divided into five sections, including a space that explores the origins of the NAD, and explorations of European art, painting in America in the early 20th century, and post-war Realism.

The show includes the works of artists such as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Maxfield Parrish, Andrew Wyeth, Thomas Eakins, Robert Henri, Isabel Bishop, Richard Estes, and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith.

The show is free for museum members, and costs nonmembers $14 adults; $11 for seniors, students, active military, and groups (10 or more); and $6 for youth (ages 7–17).

For more information, go to daytonartinstitute.org/foramerica or call 937-223-4278.

■ A dedication ceremony of local artist Natalie Lanese’s mural in Promenade Park will take place during the Fire and Ice Festival this weekend.

The Dazzle Colonnade was completed last summer by Lanese in the walkway area of ProMedica’s Depot garage in the park at 400 Water St. The artist is known for using pattern and movement in her contemporary pieces.

The dedication ceremony will start at 7 p.m. Friday, at the location of the mural, and will include remarks by Lanese, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, and staff from the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo.

For more information, go to theartscommission.org or check out the Arts Commission’s Facebook page.

■ There will be an artist reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday on the fourth floor of the Mulford Library, on the University of Toledo’s Health Science Campus, as part of an artist showcase of student and local artists’ work.

The free reception will include a talk by Toledo artist Paul Brand, titled “Create Your Own World.”

The art show runs through April 10.
