First of all, many thanks to the dedicated medical professionals, nursing home staff, first responders, and others for their courageous efforts and commitment who are working the front lines during our COVID-19 challenges. It is because of you that so many patients affected by the virus have recovered.
The greenhouse industry, like so many small businesses, are under siege from this terrible pandemic. We know vaccines will be available soon and that this time shall pass, but not soon enough for all Americans that strive to overcome these challenges. As our country transitions between a balanced safety and economical solution, safety protocol continues to evolve, creating challenges for both businesses and their customers. The greenhouse industry is no exception.
As of this writing, several of our retail Maumee Valley Growers Association (MVGA) greenhouse and garden centers remain open as the industry transitions between the holiday and the upcoming spring season.
Wholesale growers, on the other hand, are now entering their busiest season, which in our area only lasts about four months. These growers are not open to the public but still have similar challenges since they employ many individuals.
Both retail and wholesale greenhouse growers (both food and plants) typically prepare six months in advance as it takes time for plants to germinate from seed to sale. This, in part, explains why the agriculture industry is considered essential and so vulnerable. Without this "care period," plant life would cease, and the grower would lose an entire year of production. This is the challenge both greenhouse growers and farmers deal with daily; long growing periods and short sales seasons.
As we all strive to make the best of each of our challenges, it is fortunate to know that our local greenhouse experience offers opportunities for us to experience plants’ wonderment in a few months. There is plenty of space to roam, accommodations to ensure proper distancing at the cash register, masks, and commonsense help diminish many virus issues to provide a pleasant shopping experience. Pickup services are available at most locations. Feel free to call ahead.
MVGA promotes individual growers to work with each other and with academic, government, and community partners to address these challenges facing their industry.
Growers take pride in being up-to-date on new offerings and trends for indoor and outdoor purchases, such as nursery stock and perennials.
Currently, MVGA members employ approximately 750 individuals and produce slightly more than $100 million in revenue for the local area.
Most greenhouses grow their flowers and produce.
Pending any new, unforeseen circumstances, we will soon be able to experience a beautiful array of locally grown flowers, food, crafts, and at some locations, a nice assortment of nursery and produce items made available in a safe environment.
