Cedar Point tests virtual reality on Iron Dragon

Roller coaster a new experience with headsets

SANDUSKY — Virtual reality has finally landed at Cedar Point.

Starting Friday, select riders on the Iron Dragon roller coaster at the Sandusky amusement park can don virtual reality headsets for a new ride experience on one of the park’s classic roller coasters.

The VR rides on the coaster will be offered between 6 and 9 p.m. nightly.

Park spokesman Tony Clark said the track layout is the same, but riders will watch an animated video in their headset that offers a 360-degree view of the virtual surroundings.

“While the ride is in motion, the animation closely matches the movements of each car for a riding experience like no other,” he said.

The virtual reality on the Iron Dragon is in a “beta test” and patrons must sign up to participate, Mr. Clark said. Riders also have to be at least 13 to ride.

The number of ride slots is limited and reservations begin at noon near Iron Dragon’s entrance.

The suspended steel coaster off the park’s midway in Celebration Plaza opened in 1987 and has a top speed of 40 mph.

The testing is part of the park’s Cedar Point Nights, which run from Friday through Aug. 14.
