With the opening of BoxLunch at the Franklin Park Mall, shoppers can look good while doing good.
The chain, whose Franklin Park location opened June 28, has a motto of “get some, give back.”
It does so by partnering with Feeding America and donating one meal for every $10 customers spend on its selection of pop culture-themed merchandise.
Other retailers and companies frequently make charitable donations, but most do so in lump-sum effort.
BoxLunch is different in that its charitable funding is based on its stores’ receipts.
The terms of BoxLunch’s national agreement with Feeding America dictate that the company will provide at least 5.5 million meals — the equivalent of $500,000 — between Feb. 2 and Jan. 31.
Nancy Curby, a vice president at Feeding America, said that this partnership has already yielded more than 7 million meals for Feeding America.
The local affiliate of Feeding America is the Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank at 24 East Woodruff Ave.
In a statement, BoxLunch said because hunger affects almost every community, the retailer’s efforts could have a “regional and national” impact.
Though every meal helps, the donated meals are supplemented by another goal: education. BoxLunch’s website compiles statistics about hunger, highlighting that 48 million Americans and 16 million children experience hunger each year.
The brick and mortar stores stress awareness, too.
“BoxLunch retail storefronts across the country provide a way for the general public to be exposed to hunger relief and offer a means for their customers to easily give back through their purchases,” Mrs. Curby said.
The best-selling item at BoxLunch stores has been a Pixar-themed crock pot.
The store also carries T-shirts, backpacks and toys.
