Toledo-area companies collaborate to build Lima health sciences center

There’s a new center that will train nurses and other health professionals under construction in Lima, Ohio.

But considering the number of Lucas County-based construction companies there working on the project, one might think it was being built in Toledo.

Work on Rhodes State College’s new $20 million Borra Center for Health Sciences began in March and is moving along steadily with completion set for next year. When finished, the 50,000 square foot building will become the new home to five of the college’s health science programs: nursing, physical therapist assistant, occupational therapy assistant, emergency medical services, and respiratory care.

And though it will be located in Lima’s downtown square directly across from both the city convention center and city hall, the construction phase, at least, will have a decidedly Toledo area flavor with at least 17 contractors or subcontractors doing work on the project.

“The bulk of them are from the Toledo area,” said Hal Munger, a partner with Toledo’s Munger Munger + Associates architects, who has been working with officials at Rhodes State the last 10 years to turn the health sciences building project from vision to reality.

“The Spieker Co. (of Northwood) is the general contractor, so they hold the contract with the state of Ohio to build it. They go out and hire the subcontractors to do the various disciplines, so they work with people they know,” Mr. Munger said. “These companies, they’re people they’ve worked with and who had competitive bids to do the work.”

Not all the companies are from the Toledo area. Some are from the Lima area and some are from south of Allen County, Mr. Munger said.

But the Toledo area can take a certain pride in the construction work because the project was subject to open bidding by the state of Ohio, and Spieker and the other companies were chosen for their bids and work, Mr. Munger said.

“That’s a publicly-bid project through the state of Ohio. We had bidders from Columbus and Dayton and all over the place but (Spieker) won out,” he said.

Other area firms involved in the project include LKL Engineers, of Toledo, for structural consulting; JDRM Engineering, of Sylvania, for mechanical/electrical/technology consulting; Lewandowski Engineers, of Toledo, for site work; Bowser-Morner Engineers, of Toledo, for site testing.

Significant subcontracting work went to Todd Alspaugh & Associates, of Toledo, for site work; Gurtzweiler Inc., of Toledo, for steel erection; Interstate Commercial Glass, of Northwood, for glass work; Schoen Inc., of Toledo, for paving work; Spartan Construction, of Monclova Township, for masonry; Ivey Development, of Toledo, for rebar; Kuhlman Corp., of Toledo, for cast stone; Lakeside Interiors, of Perrysburg, for interior work; Architectural Arts, of Toledo, for signage; Bayes Inc., of Perrysburg, for mechanical work, and Sperling Heating and Ventilating, of Holland, for sheet metal work.

The project is being paid for by funds from the state’s biennium Capital budget, the City of Lima, Rhode’s State, two Lima area hospitals and from a “Friends of the College” fund.

It is named after the Pier C. Borra Family Foundation, which made a significant contribution to the project’s cost.

Mr. Munger said the Lima health community has long recognized the need for such a facility in downtown Lima and the health center will be strategically located very near Lima Memorial Hospital and St. Rita’s Hospital.

“What’s so nice about it is this will be a catalyst for other redevelopment in downtown Lima and you’re already seeing other projects being talked about and pursued by others,” he said.
