General Motors will invest $75 million into the Toledo Transmission plant to increase capacity for full-size truck transmissions, according to an internal announcement.
The investment will increase capacity for 10-speed transmissions for the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, plant Executive Director Eric Gonzales and UAW 14 shop Chairman Jeff King wrote to staff Thursday. In the past four months, there have been $114 million in investments announced at the plant, they said.
“These commitments not only reflect confidence in the TTO team, but also showcases the sense of ownership and pride our employees have in the transmissions we build in Toledo,” they wrote.
Tony Totty, president of UAW Local 14, said the investment should add a second 10-speed transmission shift. Currently, the plant does work on 10-speed diesel transmissions, and this would add a gasoline line. Mr. Totty said he looks forward to more investments.
“When General Motors invests in our facility it does not just invest in our great workforce, it invests in our community,” he said. “Investments like this helps the local tax base which then helps fund schools, police, fire and rescue along with maintaining property values. Today is a good day for all of Toledo.”
A company spokesman said work would begin immediately, and said the investment retains jobs, instead of creating new ones.
UAW members voted last week to approve a local agreement with GM. Mr. Totty said the agreement, which covers about 1,500 workers at GM’s Toledo plant on Alexis Road, focused on work rules, improved working conditions, and positioned the facility for future investment.
