A popular restaurant in Sylvania has closed after 14 years in business, but the owners of a popular eatery in Perrysburg have plans to occupy the Sylvania space.
Hamway’s on the Main, 5577 Monroe St. in the Promenade Shops strip center, recently closed the location, which opened in 2002. The company’s Web site and a sign on the door noted the closing and thanked customers.
However, the Hamway’s site is expected to remain closed only four or five months.
The lease was bought by Jeff and Melissa Kies, owners of the popular 5th Street Pub at 105 W. 5th St., Perrysburg.
A manager of the pub, Jessie Smith, confirmed the sale. She said the owners plan to open a 5th Street Pub location at the site, possibly by early summer. The Perrysburg pub is perhaps best known for its pizza.
Hamway’s on the Main was the successor to the Hamway’s Food and Spirits, which operated from 1982 to 2000 at 5855 Alexis Rd. Both restaurants were run by Jim and Shirley Hamway and their daughter, Sue.
The Hamways retired from the restaurant business about eight years ago. Mr. Hamway died in 2012.
After the couple retired, Hamway’s on the Main was purchased by Mr. Hamway’s son, Tom, who ran the business with co-owners Kent Bishop and Mark Ralston.
Both Hamway’s restaurants were frequently reviewed by The Blade’s restaurant critics and received glowing reviews. Hamway’s was known for its liver and onions entree.
