A National Review editorial in The Blade (“No Double Standards,” April 30) lamented the Democrats’ double standard in which they embrace claims of sexual assault made against right-wing politicians like Justice Brett Kavanaugh and President Trump, but then dismiss such claims when made against Democratic politicians like Joe Biden.
But this is logically no different than lamenting the Republicans’ double standard of rejecting claims of sexual assault made against right-wing politicians like Justice Kavanaugh and Mr. Trump, but embracing such claims when made against Democratic politicians like Mr. Biden. The real double standard here is not between left and right. It is between males and females.

That sucking sound
After reading Keith Burris’ opinion column on Sunday, April 19, concerning “our arrangement” that we [the United States] no longer produce some very vital products here.
What did you expect? When we send “diplomats,” not businessmen, to negotiate “deals” that never favor us only because we want to be the nice guys (which, by the way, President Trump is accused of daily by the news media of not being so “gracious’”).
Too bad for the other guy in my book. We now can see where “diplomacy” and very bad deals have placed us in the last 25-30 years.
Also, I find it mind boggling that the United Auto Workers still backs the Democrats that sent the automobile industry into a tailspin when Bill Clinton and party designed and signed the North American Free Trade Deal.
Ross Perot warned us: “Do you hear that giant sucking sound?” Those are your jobs going elsewhere.

Opportunity
The University of Toledo now has an opportunity to hire a game-changing leader, which led me to look at who the trustees were that would select this leader.
What struck me in reviewing the trustees’ backgrounds is that we also have a crisis at UTMC, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, and not a single trustee is a medical doctor, hospital administrator, or has experience running a health system.
How is this possible and why has this never surfaced before? How can one successfully operate a hospital and medical school without experienced leadership at the very top of the organization?
We must do better. This university, students, and city deserve better.

Hussain correct
Dr. S. Amjad Hussain had it right about the public safety being more important than personal rights (“Religions should observe freedom from coronavirus”, April 15.)
If I may paraphrase Mr. Spock, from the TV series, Star Trek: The health needs of society as a whole, outweigh the religious practices of the few, or even the one.
Enough said.
