M&M Restaurant Supply, a local distribution center that provides food, paper, and other supplies to local quick-service restaurants, is expected to close within a year, idling 130 workers.
The decision to close was announced Tuesday by the operation's parent company, Keystone Foods LLC of West Conshohocken, Pa. Workers at the operation are represented by Teamsters Local 20.
Maureen Garrity, a Keystone spokesman, said in a statement that the company has entered into an agreement to sell the assets of its distribution business.
The statement said that after a comprehensive review it was determined that the Toledo facility at 1015 New York St.. would not remain viable or salable unless Keystone were to spend a sizable amount for upgrades.
The company said in its statement that the decision to close M&M Restaurant Supply was a financial decision and in no way a reflection on the work force, which it said had "performed at the highest level."
M&M was formed in the 1960s to supply the area's McDonald's restaurants.
Operating under various owners, it eventually counted quick-service restaurants throughout Toledo and metro Detroit as its customers.
Besides its distribution center in Toledo, Keystone operates a plant in North Baltimore that produces hamburgers and other beef products for local fast-food restaurants. There was no indication that the North Baltimore plant would be affected.
