The celebrated holiday cheese that arrived in Toledo over the weekend has sold out.
“The original cheese wheel is totally gone,” said John Hoover, marketing director for The Andersons, which partnered with The Blade to revive a beloved Toledo tradition this year.
The 3,200-pound wheel of holiday cheddar arrived at The Andersons West Toledo store Saturday and was gone by mid-day Monday, Mr. Hoover said.
The Andersons stores around the Toledo area each have smaller wheels of the same cheddar, but they aren’t expected to last, he said.
“We’ll be lucky if there is any holiday cheddar left anywhere by mid-week,” he said.
The holiday cheddar was crafted at a Wisconsin dairy and aged for 90 days before arriving in Toledo Saturday.
The cheese is part of a long-lost but resurrected Toledo holiday tradition that started decades ago at Tiedtke’s, the landmark downtown department store at 408 Adams St., which closed in 1973. Former Tiedtke’s customers and employees have told Mr. Hoover that the giant cheese wheel at that store also used to sell out within a couple of days each year, he said.
