Former WTVG-TV, Channel 13, sports director and 5:30 p.m. co-anchor, Rob Powers, who left the station for a sports anchor job in New York, is returning home to Cleveland.
On Friday the Plain Dealer reported that Powers is joining WEWS-TV, Channel 5, in August to co-anchor the ABC affiliate's 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts.
Powers leaves his position as lead sports anchor at WABC-TV, Channel 7, in New York, where he was hired in 2009 as the station's weekend sports anchor.
A press release by WEWS notes that Powers grew up in the Cleveland suburb Parma Heights and graduated from Holy Name High School in Parma Heights and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich. The release also notes that he worked as a sports department intern at the station in the late 1980s.
“The dream comes true starting with this announcement,” Powers said in the release. "I wouldn’t leave New York for anything but home, and that’s Cleveland and NewsChannel 5, where it all began for me.
"I absolutely love the Cavs, Indians, and Browns, but I’d say football is my favorite sport overall,” he said. “From Super Bowls to the World Series to the Stanley Cup Finals, I’ve covered literally every major league sporting event and can’t wait to root for and report on our home teams.”
