Fund-raiser planned for group that aids veterans

Fund-raiser planned for group that aids veterans

A nonprofit organization that provides career counseling and related assistance to special-forces soldiers planning a transition from the military to the civilian work force will hold a fund-raising event today at the Inverness Club.

Founded in 2012, the Honor Foundation is the United States’ first purpose-formed “transition readiness institute” for special-forces soldiers, according to an organizational statement and Emily Burke, a spokesman.

“These are guys who will never ask for help. They are not a charity case,” Ms. Burke said.

But despite honed skills that “translate excellently into elite business,” many freshly discharged special-forces personnel struggle making transitions to civilian life. According to the foundation, 90 percent report difficulty finding jobs, marital problems, and depression in their first 12 to 18 months out of the military.

The foundation’s services include executive education, professional development, career coaching, mentorship, and transition management.

“We provide leadership for a community of leaders, unlike any other,” Ms. Burke said.

For now, she said, the foundation targets its efforts toward special-operations Marine veterans and the Navy SEALS “because of our locations.

“We’ve had tremendous interest from the Rangers, though, and in the next few years are hoping to be able to expand into areas they’re typically located.”

The foundation has a $1.3 million operating budget this year, of which $700,000 is covered by a grant from the Navy SEAL Foundation.

The local fund-raiser will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Inverness Club, 4001 Dorr St., with an admission charge of $175. A reception with cocktails is scheduled for the first hour, followed by dinner, a presentation, and silent auction.
