Suspended Toledo city official resigns after hearing

A high-ranking city of Toledo employee, who was suspended last month without pay for crashing a city-owned Jeep twice and leaving the scene of an accident, resigned Wednesday after an administrative hearing.

Mike Bombrys, whose title is “administrator public services 1” for the city, was cited for following too closely, inattention to operation, and leaving the scene of an accident, said Toledo police Lt. Joe Heffernan, the department’s spokesman.

Mr. Bombrys is a retired Toledo police officer who worked in city administration.

He was cited June 26 and suspended without pay the next day.

Mr. Bombrys could not be reached for comment.

City spokesman Carrie Hartman said Mr. Bombrys appeared for a hearing with city human resources officials before he resigned. Mr. Bombrys was scheduled to appear for a hearing last month but asked for a delay while he waited for the results of a public records request on accidents involving other city employees.

“Mr. Bombrys ultimately opted to resign for personal reasons,” Ms. Hartman said.

He will be paid for vacation, discretionary, and compensatory time totaling $5,429, she said.

There was damage to the front bumper and front right tire of the city’s 2015 Jeep Cherokee.

Sara Mahon, 32, of the 100 block of Woodruff Street, was northbound on Lagrange Street near the I-75 underpass about 12:45 p.m. June 26. Ms. Mahon told police Mr. Bombrys struck her vehicle from behind. Six children, including an infant, were inside Ms. Mahon’s vehicle.

A police report shows Mr. Bombrys called police and said he was being chased by a Ford pickup truck driven by an unknown male.

There was minor damage to both vehicles, police said.

Mr. Bombrys crashed the city-owned Jeep 10 minutes later at Gradolph Street near Lagrange. He drove left of center, jumped the curb, and struck a fence before driving away.

Mr. Bombrys, who was paid $67,640 per year, was previously suspended from his city job. In 2015, he and another city manager were suspended by Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson for buying $7,200 worth of unauthorized exercise equipment under the guise of automobile parts for the city’s fleet and facilities division.

They were returned for a refund.
