After a 37-year hiatus, Downtown Toledo will once again be home to a YMCA facility with the Monday opening of the Downtown Toledo YMCA.
The public is invited to get a sneak peek on Thursday and Friday with tours of the new facility, located in the lower level of ProMedica’s Junction building at 300 N. Summit, formerly the KeyBank building.
Though it doesn’t have the pool that the former YMCA at Jefferson Avenue and 10th Street had, the 11,000 square-foot facility has new cardio equipment, free weights, cycling and group exercise studios, locker rooms and steam rooms.
Downtown has lacked a fitness center since the 1980 closure of the Jefferson Avenue site, a facility that had served the area since 1935, according to Blade articles written at the time.
Returning Downtown has long been a dream, said Tim Wilson, associate executive director of the new facility.
“Everything seemed to fall into place with ProMedica moving downtown,” he said, adding that officials seek to “take advantage of all of the momentum” and revitalization to the area.
“I venture to say this will be one of the nicest or nicest fitness center in the city,” he said, and is perfect for “people within walking distance, either working during the day and or living there.”
It will be open 5 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, and 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. Saturday. It will be closed on Sunday, YMCA spokesman Rob Thomas said.
Tours will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday or 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday. It will be open for patrons on Monday. Patrons can use the old location at 1500 N. Superior St. until 7 p.m. Friday.
