COLUMBUS — Ohio Senate Republicans on Monday launched a search for a replacement for former state Sen. Randy Gardner (R., Bowling Green), who resigned to become Gov. Mike DeWine’s chancellor of higher education.
The 2nd District represents all of Wood, Ottawa, and Erie counties; the western suburbs of Lucas; and most of Fulton.
With a few exceptions over the years, the district traditionally has been represented by a Wood County resident.
State Rep. Theresa Gavarone (R., Bowling Green) has already announced her intention to seek the appointment.
State Rep. Steve Arndt (R., Port Clinton) will not pursue it.
“I looked at it, but I think I will probably stay where I’m at,” he said. “I have talked a little bit with Theresa Gavarone. She would make an excellent candidate. I’ve encouraged her.”
The third House district making up the Senate district is represented by state Rep. Derek Merrin (R., Monclova Township).
“I’m considering it,” Mr. Merrin said. “I’m weighing my options. I’m in a great position in the House, but this is a tremendous opportunity. I’ll make a final decision soon after thoughtful consideration and prayer.”
The remaining 23 members of the Senate Republican Caucus will appoint Mr. Gardner’s replacement, who will complete the nearly two years left in his term and would have to run for election for a full term in 2020.
The caucus will accept applications for the vacancy — including resumes, letters of recommendation, and other material — through 4 p.m. on Jan. 25.
An identical copy should be sent to John Barron, chief of staff.
Larry Obhof, president of the Ohio Senate, plans to appoint a screening committee to consider and possibly interview applicants and make a recommendation to the full caucus.
In the meantime, Mr. Gardner’s former office is still staffed.
