A cold Christmas week is forecast for the Toledo area as the holiday approaches.
Daily highs are projected in the 30s through Wednesday but by Christmas day, the high is put at 13 with sunny skies. Heading into the holiday, the Christmas Eve low is projected at 4 with breezy conditions.
Chances of rain or snow are forecast starting Wednesday night though amounts had not been projected as of Sunday.
"All eyes remain on the intense storm system expected to impact the entire Ohio Valley and Great Lakes regions Thursday into the start of the holiday weekend," the National Weather Service said Sunday in its online forecast discussion.
Aspects of the storm include rapidly falling temperatures late Thursday night through Friday leading to rain changing to snow, and extreme cold, the weather service said in also noting potentially damaging winds.
"What is more uncertain" is how much snow will fall once the rain changes to snow on Friday, the statement said.
Light snow fell in the Toledo area on Sunday morning, but it was not enough to prompt any advisories.
In an updated statement early Monday, the weather service issued a hazardous weather outlook.
"Widespread cold temperatures and strong winds are expected, and wind chills below zero are possible," it said. "Snow accumulations are also possible."
The statement includes multiple Ohio counties, including Lucas, Wood, Ottawa, and Sandusky.
"As far as snow totals go, this remains to be seen depending how strong the dry air intrusion is in the wake of the cold front and the exact track of the low pressure system," the weather service's separate updated online forecast discussion said Monday.
"This system could be a potential major storm across the area just in time for the Christmas holiday," it stated.
