A worker died while on the job at an industrial plant in East Toledo..
Gilbert Mowery, 59, died Wednesday night at the flour mill owned by snack and beverage company Mondelez International at 2221 Front St. after sustaining injuries from a fall, the Toledo Police Department said in a report.
Dwayne Wolf, a deputy Lucas County coroner, said Mr. Mowery died from multiple blunt-force injuries.
The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department was dispatched to the flour mill about 7:30 p.m., said Pvt. Sterling Rahe, public information officer for the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department.
He said the department received a call of an injured person, and first responders found Mr. Mowery had suffered severe injuries. It was later determined that he was suffering from traumatic cardiac arrest.
While first responders were giving him aid, they later determined the injuries “were not compatible with life,” Private Rahe said.
After the first responders consulted with medical professionals from Toledo Trauma Recovery Center at Mercy Health, they were given permission to “cease efforts because they were futile at that point,” he said.
Rhonda Burke, deputy director of public affairs for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said in an email it has started an investigation into the incident and was at the flour mill Thursday morning.
“OSHA has six months to complete its investigation, issue citations, and propose monetary penalties, if violations of workplace safety and/or health regulations are found,” she said in the email, noting that her agency has opened investigations with both Mondelez Global LLC and Garda World Security Services, who also employed the Mr. Mowery.
His exact job title with either company was not immediately known.
Colin Goodrich, a supervisor at the flour mill, said Thursday the company declined to comment because of the ongoing investigation.
