Editors note: This story has been updated to reflect that the festival’s parade has been postponed because extreme heat. The parade will be held Saturday, August 24.
The 15th annual African American Festival kicks off on July 19. Hosted by the Toledo Urban Federal Credit Union, the three-day event offers everything from live music to free health screenings.
Here are a few things worth knowing:
1. The first African American Festival was held in 2004. It was created to promote history, health, and education in the African American community. Friday morning’s Prayer Breakfast and the gospel concert that night are the only events that require tickets be purchased in advance.
2. The festival celebrates African American history, culture, and the future of the community while supporting and showcasing unity. Because of the extreme heat predicted for Saturday, the parade has been postponed until Saturday, August, 24. There will also be performances from Confunkshun - “heroes of funk,” The ZAPP Band, and R&B singer Angela Winbush. Most events take place at or near Seagate Center.
3. General admission is $15 in advance with VIP tickets for $25. Tickets purchased at the door are $5 more. You can purchase tickets on Ticketmaster and at the Toledo Urban Federal Credit Union.
