Famed Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rocky Bleier will be the guest of honor at a Veterans Matter fund-raiser next month.
“We are thrilled that Rocky will be here in Toledo to share his story and to help us house homeless veterans. His story is one of great inspiration to us all,” said Veterans Matter CEO Shawn Dowling.
After his rookie season in 1968, Mr. Bleier was drafted into the Vietnam War, where he was wounded in action.
He later recovered, rejoined the Steelers, and was an important figure on four Super Bowl winning teams before he retired in 1980.
The event will be held Jan. 11 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 101 N. Summit St. in downtown Toledo. Denny Shaffer, 93.5 WRQN radio host, will be the event’s master of ceremonies.
Tickets start at $75 and can be purchased directly at veteransmatter.org/rocky.
The event will mark the latest in several local appearances Mr. Bleier has made over the years from a 2012 appearance in Gibsonburg on behalf of Fremont based non-profit Parker’s Purpose, to a 2010 speech he made before the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce.
