A former Central Catholic High School assistant girls soccer coach and substitute teacher pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges stemming from accusations she had a sexual relationship with one of her varsity players.
Kathryn Vose, 28, who now lives in Seattle, is charged in Lucas County Common Pleas Court with three counts of sexual battery, all third-degree felonies, disseminating matter harmful to juveniles, a fifth-degree felony, and corrupting another with drugs, a fourth-degree felony. Prosecutors say she engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a high school student from March, 2017, to October, 2018.
Ms. Vose and her attorney, Jerome Phillips, appeared Wednesday before Judge Linda Jennings for arraignment. The former coach was indicted March 21 by a Lucas County grand jury.
Ms. Vose was released on a monitored recognizance bond, although she was taken into custody to be booked and immediately released from the Lucas County jail. She was also ordered to submit to drug screens.
Prosecutors say she engaged in unlawful sex acts with a student and sent the girl nude photographs and romantic letters. Additionally, they believe the teacher smoked marijuana with the teen. After moving to Seattle, it is alleged the two continued their relationship long distance.
While a student 16 years or older may consent to a sexual relationship, doing so with a person of authority, such as a teacher or coach, makes the actions criminal, prosecutors said. Ms. Vose previously told The Blade her relationship with the student developed after she left the school, adding, “The student in question was an adult.”
A trial date was scheduled for May 28.
