An Arizona pair were indicted last week by a federal grand jury on accusations they possessed fentanyl as well as thousands of pills that contained the drug.
Felipe Penuelas-Rodriguez, 50, and Reyna Trejo, 30, both of Mesa, Az., were indicted in U.S. District Court in Toledo on charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.
They were both arrested earlier this month with approximately one kilogram of fentanyl, as well as approximately 2,100 pills that tested positive for fentanyl, according to court documents.
Additionally, the grand jury calls for the forfeiture of $1,300 seized from Mr. Penuelas-Rodriguez on June 6. Court documents also identify him as an illegal alien.
“The drugs seized are enough to kill thousands of people,” said U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman. “The fentanyl pills stamped to look like prescription painkillers are another reminder that there are no safe drugs available on the street.”
The pair was arraigned last week before Magistrate Judge James Knepp II.
Ms. Trejo appeared with defense attorney Jane Roman while Mr. Penuelas-Rodriguez appeared with John McMahon. Each pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The government requested detention for both defendants, who each waived a detention hearing.
The case has been assigned to Judge James Carr.
