Toledo man arraigned for murder, other charges

A judge set bond at $1 million for a Toledo man charged with murder in the city’s latest homicide and who also faces other pending charges from unrelated cases.

Demonte T. Sturdevant, 25, of the 800 block of Willow Avenue appeared Wednesday morning in Toledo Municipal Court following his arrest Tuesday. He is accused of shooting and killing Elijah Bowen, 24, of the 2000 block of Penn Road on Monday evening at an apartment building at 815 N. Ontario St.

Judge Allen McConnell set the bond and scheduled a hearing for Aug. 12. Court records show police have evidence in the case from video, items collected at the scene, and Sturdevant’s own statements.

An autopsy Tuesday by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office determined Bowen had been shot once in the abdomen. The autopsy also revealed signs he had been beaten.

Judge McConnell held additional hearings Wednesday morning for Sturdevant on pending charges from two unrelated cases. He was charged in early July with felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and having weapons under disability, a third-degree felony, and was arrested on those warrants at the same time as the murder warrant. Judge McConnell set bond for the felonious-assault charge at $100,000 and set the next hearing for that matter also on Aug. 12.

According to court records, Sturdevant is accused of assaulting a woman June 21 “for no apparent reason.” He allegedly struck the victim in the head, knocking her out, then repeatedly pistol-whipped and kicked her while she was unconscious. The woman suffered a concussion, a broken nose, a broken tooth, and a bloody lip.

A police report shows the incident as having happened outside the same North Ontario apartment building. Sturdevant is prohibited from possessing a firearm after prior convictions for aggravated robbery and felonious assault.

Also charged with felonious assault in that case is Keionna D. Bryant, 24, of the 500 block of Brighton Avenue. She is accused in court records of punching the victim repeatedly, which knocked her to the ground. As the woman stood up, Sturdevant — whom the records say is Ms. Bryant’s boyfriend — then attacked her.

Ms. Bryant also appeared Wednesday morning before Judge McConnell on the charge. He set bond at $100,000 and scheduled her hearing for Aug. 14.

In another case, Sturdevant has pending misdemeanor charges of domestic violence and assault from a November, 2019 incident in which authorities say he choked, punched, and kicked the mother of his child. Judge McConnell on Wednesday continued a total $2,000 bond in that case and set a hearing for Aug. 12.
