Toledo settles discrimination claim filed by firefighter recruit

The city of Toledo has settled a lawsuit filed by a firefighter recruit who was terminated four years ago.

Toledo City Council on Tuesday approved paying $135,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by Sierra Adebisi against Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, safety director Brian Byrd, and the city of Toledo. Officials from the city’s law department advised approval of the settlement last week.

The lawsuit, which was filed in 2020, alleges that Ms. Adebisi was subjected to “unlawful discrimination and/or retaliation and false light publications stemming from her termination as a recruit with the Toledo Fire & Rescue Academy.”

The agreement would settle all remaining claims, including back wages and attorney fees, “without constituting an admission of liability for any violation of state or federal laws,” city law officials said.
