COLUMBUS — The arraignment of the man accused of killing 13-year-old Keimani Latigue has been postponed as he recovers from injuries he sustained when Columbus police shot him on Tuesday.
Keimani’s father, Darnell Jones, 33, of the 600 block of Willard Street, Toledo, was scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Franklin County Municipal Court on a single charge of felonious assault on a police officer, a first-degree felony. The arraignment was postponed because Jones is still in a Columbus-area hospital where he is being treated for a gunshot wound.
Jones has warrants out of Toledo for murder, felonious assault, and abduction in the disappearance and death of Keimani.
On Monday, Columbus police were given the description of a car Jones was believed to be driving and told that he may in the city. Police ended up locating the vehicle, towing it, and then scouring the neighborhood where the car had been found.
Around 10 a.m. Tuesday, a member of the Columbus police SWAT team saw a man matching Jones’ description. When officers approached Jones, he pulled a gun, and the officer shot him.
The shooting occurred near Second and Dennison avenues in Columbus. A firearm was recovered at the scene, according to a statement issued by Columbus police. They reported Jones was in stable condition Tuesday at a Columbus-area hospital.
According to police records, Jones is also known as Darnell Jerome Ogletree and may use Ogletree on his ID.
Keimani disappeared March 18. Her body was recovered by police on Monday. It was found in a burned-out home in the 1100 block of Miami Street in East Toledo. She died as a result of “multiple incised wounds of the neck,” the Lucas County Coroner’s Office said. Her death was ruled a homicide.
