St. John the Baptist Campus, a kindergarten-through-eighth-grade Catholic school in Point Place, will close at the end of this school year, three years shy of its centennial anniversary.
The Diocese of Toledo announced the closure today.
The 145-student school at 2729 124th St. has had declining enrollment and faces an estimated $126,023 budget shortfall for next school year, according to a news release. Last year, 167 students attended the school.
The decision to shutter the campus was made by the board of directors of the North Community Catholic School, formed in 2012 as a partnership between North and West Toledo parishes.
Bishop Daniel Thomas approved the closure, and families were notified today.
Officials will offer busing for students, 101 of which had enrolled at the school for next year, from Point Place to NCCS’ other two K-8 campuses: Regina Coeli at 600 Regina Parkway or Most Blessed Sacrament at 4255 Bellevue Rd.
St. John’s faculty and staff were offered assistance to place them at other schools. About 30 people work at the campus, diocese spokesman Zachary Silka said.
St. John operated as a parish school from its opening in September, 1919, until NCCS took over operations for the 2014-15 school year.
No decision has been made about what will happen to the school building, which is on the same property as the church, he said.
