Toledo Public Schools will give an update on the school district’s successes and challenges Monday at a state of the district address.

The event is a first for Superintendent Romules Durant, who became the district’s leader in 2013. After his yearly review this summer, the Toledo Board of Education asked Mr. Durant to revive the practice of delivering an annual district address.

“What we talked about him doing is certainly celebrating the progress and the good things that are happening at Toledo Public Schools as well as highlighting what some of the challenges are and how might we address those,” said board President Bob Vasquez.

The public is welcome. Doors open at 5 p.m. Monday at Bowsher High School, 2200 Arlington Ave.

TPS mailed invitations to about 300 community leaders, politicians, and business people, plus sent emails to faith-based leaders, nonprofit organizations, trade groups, and others. Building principals and teachers union representatives were invited too.

Spokesman Patty Mazur said the last state of the district address took place nearly a decade ago, under the administration of former superintendent John Foley. He gave such addresses in 2008 and in 2009.

Mr. Vasquez said board members wanted to revive the practice because it offers a chance to communicate with the community.

The event will include demonstrations from the career-technology program, Old West End Academy students will recite the TPS mission and vision, the Waite High School’s show choir will perform, and videos will feature students and teachers.

Ms. Mazur said organizers want a modern twist on an old fireside-chat instead of relying on speakers at a lectern.

The event will be live-streamed by WGTE on its website at wgte.org and available later for replay on the district’s website at tps.org.
