Nineteen area high school graduates who plan to attend local colleges and universities have received a Mr. and Mrs. William Block, Jr., Scholarship to help fund their studies in the upcoming academic year.
Since 2017, the scholarship has annually awarded $4,000 each to 20 graduates of Lucas County or Wood County high schools who are pursuing two or four-year undergraduate degrees at Bowling Green State University, Lourdes University, Owens Community College, or the University of Toledo. The $1 million fund was established in 2016 by Carol and William Block, Jr., to grant scholarships for 20 years. Recipients who remain eligible can receive the award for two consecutive years.
“I can’t think of a better way to give back to the Toledo community than to help these deserving students afford college,” Mr. Block said.
Mr. Block is a member of both the board and executive committee of Block Communications Inc., the parent company of The Blade. He previously served as president and chairman of BCI, and as co-publisher of The Blade and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from 1990 to 2001.
