Toledo Public Schools plans to move the Toledo Early College from the University of Toledo’s Scott Park to the former Driscoll Alumni Center on main campus beginning next school year.
The board of education approved a long-term lease agreement Monday with the University of Toledo for the new location at 2800 W. Bancroft St., according to a news release. The building is undergoing renovations and modifications to meet the school’s needs.
Toledo Early College is a preparatory program for students in seventh to 12th grades that focuses on college readiness with curriculum designed to fit in with courses at UT. The move is a step toward bringing those students closer to the university’s main campus and providing more options to experience the college atmosphere, the release shows.
According to University of Toledo spokesman Meghan Cunningham, the university will fund $1.7 million towards renovations and TPS will match with another $1.7 million towards the project.
TPS board president Stephanie Eichenberg said the relocation is ideal for various reasons.
“The board appreciates this for a couple of reasons. It puts the students closer to campus for their classes right now there’s a shuttle bus that services them but they’ll be able to walk across the street and be at their classes. I also like that board members will be able to go in and make modifications to the building that will bring it up to the same safety standards as our other buildings,” she said.
