Tap water in Attica remains safe despite train derailment, health district says

ATTICA, Ohio — The Seneca County General Health District said in a news release Thursday that it wants Attica residents to know their tap water is still safe to consume.

A Feb. 11 train derailment resulted in two tanker cars leaking material. One contained corn syrup and the other contained ethanol. But the Village of Attica has confirmed that its water system has remained fully pressurized and that there is no risk of contamination from the spill, the health district said.

As a precaution, water samples are being collected from the Attica water tower, which is downstream from the spill. Two tests so far have shown no detectable levels of ethanol in the drinking water, according to the health district, which added that the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has told the village to continue weekly testing until the cleanup is finished.

Attica is in Seneca County, about 72 miles southeast of downtown Toledo and 21 miles southeast of Tiffin.
