SWANTON — A fire late Friday afternoon destroyed foam mats stored under football bleachers at Swanton High School — and melted a section of the grandstand.
“It just burned that hot that fast that it melted the aluminum,” Deputy Chief Gary Roytek said. The far northern section of the home bleachers sustained the most damage, he added.
No one was injured. The cause remains under investigation.
The varsity team played Friday night at Ottawa Hills.
The blaze was reported about 4:40 p.m. A sixth-grade football game had just concluded at a field nearby, Chief Roytek said. Parents noticed the smoke and flames.
“There was quite a bit of traffic to the 911 center,” he said.
A damage estimate is to be calculated after the chief speaks with school officials.
