A Toledo Public Schools substitute teacher accused of having sex with a Bowsher High School student in a classroom is facing four felony sexual battery charges.
Jason J. Sybert, 41, of the 100 block of Water Street in Waterville, was charged Tuesday morning. Records in Toledo Municipal Court show Mr. Sybert is accused of twice having sex with a female student in a classroom at Bowsher. He is also accused of performing oral sex on her once and receiving oral sex once, also in a classroom.
Lt. Kevan Toney, spokesman for Toledo police, said the student was 17 years old at the time of the offenses between April 1 and May 30, 2018.
“The investigation is still ongoing,” the lieutenant said.
Patty Mazur, spokesman for TPS, said the now 18-year-old student came forward Thursday. Mr. Sybert was immediately placed on paid administrative leave but resigned Friday to avoid a disciplinary hearing.
A Toledo police school resource officer was immediately notified, as was Lucas County Children Services. The school also notified the Ohio Department of Education regarding Mr. Sybert’s substitute teaching license.
Julie Malkin, spokesman for Children Services, confirmed Tuesday the agency is also investigating. Ms. Mazur said no other students have reported any incidents involving Mr. Sybert.
He was hired as a substitute in March, 2017, and most recently was a long-term sub teaching math at Bowsher with a pay rate of $207 per day.
Records obtained by The Blade show no other disciplinary actions being taken against Mr. Sybert by TPS. A resume he submitted to the district shows him as a 2016 graduate of Bowling Green State University earning a bachelor’s degree in individualized studies with a focus on adolescent young adult mathematics education. He previously owned Sybert Automotive in Bowling Green.
Glowing remarks submitted by people he listed as references when applying in 2017 called Mr. Sybert professional, thoughtful, analytical, and helpful. One reference said “he connects” with students and “is who I would like my own children to model themselves on.”
Mr. Sybert is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning in Toledo Municipal Court.
