OAK HARBOR, Ohio — A second teen has died following a Friday evening crash when the car he was driving skidded on State Rt. 19 and was broadsided by an oncoming car.
Bret Gaskalla, 18, was driving a Chevrolet Malibu northbound on Route 19 in Salem Township south of West Oak Harbor Southeast Road when he lost control and the vehicle slid sideways into the path of a southbound Chrysler 200 driven by John Hurst, 34, that struck the Malibu’s passenger-side door, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Richard May, 17, a passenger inside Mr. Gaskalla’s car, was pronounced dead at the scene while Mr. Gaskalla was flown to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo with serious injuries. Ryan Purpura, a regional spokesman for the highway patrol, said Sunday that Mr. Gaskalla died Saturday of his injuries.
Mr. Hurst, who had minor injuries, and the May youth wore seat belts while Mr. Gaskalla did not, troopers said.
