A vehicle traveling more than 90 mph on the Ohio Turnpike in Fulton County was chased into Lucas County and Wood County early Monday when the vehicle crashed and two people ran away, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported.
Both people were eventually caught, one of them located in a pond and wooded area near Interstate 75 between Buck Road and the turnpike, patrol Sgt. Ryan Purpura said. That suspect was taken to a local hospital to be checked, Sergeant Purpura said.
Two other people in the car — a baby and a female of unknown age — were taken to an area hospital to be checked out as a precaution.
The chase started around 5:30 a.m. when a trooper from the patrol's Swanton post spotted the fast-moving vehicle heading east on the turnpike, Sergeant Purpura said.
"He caught up to the vehicle between the Airport Highway exit and the Maumee exit and tried to initiate a traffic stop," Sergeant Purpura said. "The vehicle failed to stop and the pursuit ensued."
A patrol trooper then put down stop sticks near the Maumee River.
"They were successful, flattening at least one tire," Sergeant Purpura said. "The vehicle continued on a short distance and crashed around exit 64, which is the I-75 interchange on the turnpike."
That is when the two people got out of the vehicle in Wood County and ran in opposite directions, Sergeant Purpura said. One of them was caught a short time later. The second person was apprehended about 10 a.m. in the pond off the east side of I-75, Sergeant Purpura said.
That suspect was in the water among trees, Sergeant Purpura said.
No names were released as the patrol continues its investigation and works to identify all of the people, Sergeant Purpura said.
The type of vehicle involved was not immediately known.
