New Toledo police recruit charged with OVI, hit skip, reckless driving

A newly-graduated Toledo police officer has been charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident after a pair of crashes Saturday afternoon in the Old Orchard neighborhood.

Officer Caila Barringer, 23, just graduated from the police academy in May. Police representatives were not immediately available for comment on the situation or potential consequences for the new officer.

The first crash occurred at Secor and Darlington roads, where an Ottawa Hills police officer was dispatched after a report that a small black car had struck a utility pole and fled the scene. According to an Ottawa Hills police report, electrical wires from the pole were laying across Secor Road.

Just as the Ottawa Hills officer was about to leave the scene, several citizens on bikes rode up and reported that a small black car had just struck a tree in the 2600 block of Densmore Drive, according to the report.

Upon arriving at Densmore and Kenwood Boulevard just after 3 p.m., the report said, police found a black Honda sedan that had struck a tree, jumped the curb, and landed in someone’s yard. The suspected driver, Ms. Barringer, was bleeding from the mouth, and had abrasions around her neck.

Ms. Barringer showed the Ottawa Hills officer her Toledo police badge, according to the report. The officer asked where her weapon was, and she said it was in the trunk, but then reached into her purse, where the officer observed a gun.

The officer then secured the purse and weapon, the report said, and asked a first responder to check on Ms. Barringer’s injuries.

Ms. Barringer’s arraignment is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday in Toledo Municipal Court. She has been charged with three misdemeanors — two first-degree, and one minor. First-degree misdemeanors carry a maximum sentence of 80 days in jail and a $1,000 fine, and minor misdemeanors carry a maximum fine of $150.

According to a municipal court affidavit, Ms. Barringer’s driver’s license was confiscated, though she refused to be tested for alcohol or drugs. Ms. Barringer could not immediately be reached for comment.
