BGSU men's basketball player shot in vehicle traveling on I-475

Bowling Green State University men’s basketball player Ubong Etim was one of five traveling in a vehicle on I-475 in Toledo Saturday night when it was struck by gunfire.

Mr. Etim, 18, sought treatment at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center at 2:48 a.m. Saturday for a gunshot wound not considered life-threatening, according to a police report.

Two BGSU football players, Dierre Kelly, 20, and Willie Jones, 19, were also in the vehicle but were not injured in the incident. Thomas Kane, 20, and Tatora Moore, 19, also were in the vehicle but not injured.

According to police, the car was fired upon by a “passing vehicle.” An initial report stated it occurred on I-75, but Sgt. Adam Fish, a Toledo Police Department spokesman, said Tuesday that the gunfire occurred on eastbound I-475 near Upton Avenue.

Alex Solis, BGSU’s deputy chief of staff and spokesman, said in a provided statement the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

“Bowling Green State University is aware of the June 11 incident in Toledo involving student-athlete Ubong Etim,” the statement read. “We remain focused on supporting him in his recovery. While other student-athletes were present in the vehicle, there were no additional injuries reported to the University. Due to an ongoing law enforcement investigation, BGSU has no further comment at this time.”
