Former Democratic Party chairman assaulted outside his South Toledo residence

A former Lucas County Democratic party chairman is recovering at an area hospital after he was jumped late Thursday outside his South Toledo residence and robbed of cash and his vehicle by four males, three of which were teens who were later arrested following a pursuit, police said.

John Irish, 74, of the 3000 block of River Road, was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, where he was admitted with injuries to his face, police said in a report.

Mr. Irish has multiple jaw fractures that would need surgery but is expected to make a full recovery, Abby Arnold, his daughter, said.

Police responded to Mr. Irish’s residence at about 9:34 p.m. on a report of a robbery and found out that he had just returned home with his wife and was parking his vehicle when four males with firearms approached him, the report said. One of them then struck the victim in the face and robbed him of his vehicle and money clip.

Lt. Paul Davis, the Toledo Police Department spokesman, said the three arrested assailants are juveniles.

“It’s very concerning that something like that could happen to my parents in their own driveway,” Ms. Arnold said.

Shortly after police arrival, officers located the stolen vehicle, at which time a pursuit ensued, ending up with the arrest of the three suspects, whose names were not immediately available.

Mr. Irish was the county’s Democratic Party chairman in 2006 and 2007. He previously served as the county’s senior deputy treasurer under Treasurer Ray Kest from 1983 to 2005.

The incident remains under investigation by police, who released no additional information as of Friday afternoon.
