The fourth person killed in Friday's 46-vehicle pileup Friday along the Ohio Turnpike was identified Tuesday as a 30-year-old Cleveland resident.
The motorist was Francisco Gutierrez-Martinez, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said in an update after the family had been notified. The patrol had identified on Sunday the three others killed in the pileup as Julie E. Roth, 37, of Toledo, Bernard M. Bloniarz, 59, of Napoleon, and Emma L. Smith, 19, of Webberville, Mich.
The crashes were reported beginning about 12:34 p.m. Friday during a vigorous winter storm that moved through the region. Multiple other people were injured. The crash remained under investigation Tuesday, patrol Sgt. Ryan Purpura said.
The patrol had reported earlier Tuesday that 13 people were killed on Ohio roadways during the four-day Christmas weekend, up from 10 last year. This year’s reporting period ran from midnight Friday through 11:59 p.m. Monday.
Troopers removed 56 impaired drivers from Ohio’s roads during the holiday, while citing 14 for distracted driving and 21 for drugs, the patrol said.
Warren (418), Franklin (322), and Delaware (282) counties led the state in total traffic incidents during Christmas weekend. Lucas County had 124, and 156 were reported in Wood County, the patrol reported.
