Fire crews tamed what was described as a large outdoor fire off Edgewater Drive in the Point Place area Saturday afternoon.

"High winds off the lake made for rapid fire spread threatening nearby structures and boats still in storage," the Washington Township Fire Department said in an update via social media.

No injuries were reported. The call came in at about 12:15 p.m. with video showing heavy smoke in the area.

Initial reports were that brush was burning with concerns that flames would spread to a residential area. Crews on scene, however, were able to contain the fire before it reached any residences, a battalion chief at the scene said. The fire’s cause was not immediately known.

Water supply was an issue as the closest hydrant did not work, the Washington Township update said, crediting the Morin Point Fire Department with setting up a system to draw water from the Ottawa River.

In addition, water tankers were brought in by the Erie and Bedford township fire departments.

"Excellent work by all these departments working together made for a positive outcome with no injuries or structures damaged," Washington Township fire crews said in their post.

Washington Township was dispatched to assist the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department.

The fire started in a backlot. Crews continued to work on hotspots until after 2 p.m.
