A 60-year-old man died early Friday morning when his car lost control on Douglas Road in Toledo and struck a University of Toledo police cruiser head-on, officials said.

Gregory Imber of Toledo was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash which authorities responded to at about 1:41 a.m. Officer Vincent Betori, 27, was taken to ProMedica Toledo Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

It occurred just south of Douglas Road’s intersection with University Hills Boulevard, northeast of the university campus.

Authorities said Mr. Imber’s northbound vehicle lost control due to high water that had pooled on Douglas from the thunderstorms that drenched the city late Thursday and early Friday. The vehicle, a small Volkswagen, went over the centerline and was struck by the southbound police cruiser SUV. 

The crash closed Douglas Road for a time early Friday. Officials said an investigation continues.
