The closure of westbound Airport Highway near South McCord Road in Springfield Township for an oil spill of about 300 gallons will continue until further notice, authorities said.
A semi driven by John Beach, 29, of Fayette, Ohio, was hauling motor oil on Route 2 early Wednesday afternoon when the load became unsecured and about 275 gallons spilled onto the roadway, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The Springfield Township Fire Department arrived on the scene at 12:57 p.m., Battalion Chief Andrew Sauder said. “I can tell you it goes at least to Spring Meadows Drive,” he said of the spill. “It was on the back of a truck that somehow came off,” Chief Sauder said.
Fire crews left the scene at 5:45 p.m., at which time they turned it over to Ohio Department of Transportation and area environmental agencies, he said.
Rhonda Pees, ODOT spokesman, said the road is not expected to open before 10 p.m. and that “it could be later.”
