A South Toledo man was arrested early Monday morning for robbing a neighborhood carryout he often frequents.
Around 11 p.m. Sunday, a masked man walked into the East Gate Carryout at 1853 Eastgate Road, produced a gun, and demanded the clerk hand over cash, according to police. The clerk did as asked, and the man fled on foot.
The store manager reviewed the surveillance video and told police the suspect appeared to be a regular customer who lives nearby.
As police conducted a sweep of the area, they saw that regular customer, Sydney L. Byrd II, 34, though the window of an apartment next door to the carryout. He was counting cash.
Byrd and another person in the apartment were taken in for questioning, and Byrd was subsequently charged with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony. He was booked in the Lucas County jail and arraigned Monday morning in Toledo Municipal Court. The other individual was released without being charged.
Byrd’s bond was set at $100,000. He is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on April 2.
