None of several reports over the past two years regarding the care of Keimani Latigue, whose body was found Monday in a burned-out house in East Toledo, concerned Darnell Jones, the man police have said is her father, Lucas County Children Services said Friday.
On Tuesday, Columbus police arrested Darnell Jones in a run-in during which he was shot and wounded.
Jones, 33, of the 600 block of Willard Street, Toledo, was wanted on charges of murder, felonious assault, and abduction in the disappearance and death of Keimani.
In its Friday statement, LCCS said it “does not and has never had information concerning who the father of [Keimani] is.”
“The alleged offender of the murder of [Keimani] was never named as the father to [Keimani] and was not named as a perpetrator of abuse or neglect of [Keimani],” the agency said. “He was not named as an involved adult or a support person to [Keimani] or Dorothy.”
The agency received a report Dec. 8, 2023, and two reports on March 21, 2024, regarding the care of the girl, who was in the care of her grandmother, Dorothy Latigue, the statement said.
“LCCS conducted investigations surrounding these concerns and found no evidence that would lead to the removal of the child from the home,” the agency said. “With each investigation, LCCS met with the child and spoke with her alone.”
According to the document, LCCS spoke to several “involved people” to get the full picture of the family, “instructed the grandmother on appropriate discipline,” and referred the family to support services “for youth with complex behavioral health and multisystem needs.”
Since March 21, 2024, there have been “no other reports of abuse or neglect” regarding the girl, the agency said.
