A citizen-led initiative aiming to keep a new Lucas County jail to downtown Toledo will likely appear before voters in February.
Toledo City Council on Tuesday approved sending the proposed charter amendment to ballot for a special election Feb. 26. The county board of elections will next review it.
This is the second recent vote on such an ordinance. Council last month voted to send it to the board but did not include a proposed special election date.
Elections officials have estimated a special election will cost about $240,000. Officials from the county prosecutor’s office have said they do not believe a city-voter amendment can enforce where county officials construct a jail.
Last week, 59 percent of county voters opposed Issue 10, a bond issue that would have funded a new jail and behavioral health solution center. The proposed jail site along the 5700 block of North Detroit Avenue in North Toledo has met opposition from a nearby citizen group.
