U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur was treated at a local hospital Wednesday after her car collided with a backhoe while she was driving through a construction zone in Toledo.
“Congresswoman Kaptur was driving east on West Bancroft Street in Toledo this morning in a single lane construction zone when a backhoe operating in the adjoining lane swung over into the lane reserved for through traffic and hit her windshield on the driver’s side,” her office said.
“She is doing well and will resume her normal schedule in the morning.”
The Toledo Democrat, the longest serving woman in the U.S. House, was driving her 2005 Ford Five Hundred eastbound at 11:15 a.m. when it struck the backhoe, according to the police report. Neither Miss Kaptur, 73, nor the equipment operator were cited.
The excavator’s bucket came into contact with Miss Kaptur’s car causing serious damage. Her car was towed and Miss Kaptur was treated for minor injuries at ProMedica Toledo Hospital.
City spokesman Ignazio Messina said the construction vehicle was operated by Crestline Paving & Excavating, a company contracted by the city.
