Tom Names switches races for city council bid

Tom Names, a Republican candidate for Lucas County commissioner, said he’s dropping out of that race to instead run for an at-large seat on Toledo City Council in November.

He’s running in the special election on Nov. 3 to replace former councilman Sandy Spang, who stepped down to work on economic development for the city.

Mr. Names, a retired engineer, ran for city council in 2019 in District 5, but was defeated by Democrat Sam Melden. He was unopposed in the April 28 primary for county commissioner.

The Lucas County Republican Party said it’s looking at candidates to replace Mr. Names in the county commission race against Democrat Tina Skeldon Wozniak. Aug. 10 is the deadline.
